The Mystery of The Doctor's New Companion (spoilers)

Picture copyright of BBC 2012 In the first episode of Series 7, Asylum of the Daleks, we meet Oswin Oswald.  She turns out of be a future avatar of Clara Oswin Oswald, who figures seriously in the latter part of Series 7.

However, Oswald purports to be "junior entertainment manager" of the spaceship Alaska which crashed on the planet that Daleks call "the Asylum."  She aids the Doctor and his companions Amy and Rory Williams, who are divorced.  As well, the Doctor helps Amy and Rory talk to each other by making a small sacrifice.

I wish I could discuss this episode in full detail but for spoilers.

Later on, in The Snowmen, the 2012 Christmas special, a past incarnation of Clara Oswald appears in Victorian London, where the Doctor went to collect himself after tragic events in the fifth episode of Series 7, the disappearance of Rory Williams and Amelia Pond. In this episode we also get to meet a new nemesis for Doctor Who, whose presence comes to the fore later on by the end of the Seventh Season, known then only as The Great Intelligence.

By the end of this episode, the Doctor goes looking for the present-day Clara Oswald, encountering her in Series 7 Episode 6, the Bells of St John. This version of Clara Oswald then goes on to become his companion, being a daring, kick-ass, caring and compassionate kind of woman. As well, she develops computer skills which come in handy during this episode.

Overall, I like the way the Oswald incarnations are introduced, and how the mystery of Clara Oswald unfolds only to explain how the different versions of her get injected into the past, present and future, which is explained later on in the episode The Name of the Doctor, the thirteenth and final episode of Series 7.

How does Clara Oswald fit in with the Daleks?

Well, in the Asylum of the Daleks, her future incarnation which shows her computer skills and high intelligence made her someone the Doctor has to try to save, unsuccessfully.   In that episode it also suggests that high intelligence gives a person the chance to withstand becoming Dalek, by developing the delusion of being human.

And that makes Oswin Oswald a good Dalek.
